John ForbesJohn Forbes is the 13th member of the USPMGA Hall of Fame. The association welcomed him in 2020, after Brad Lebo (October 2019) and before Matt McCaslin (October 2021). He hosted the US Open twice, and he died in early 2021.
Forbes found minigolf as a boy, in the summers his family spent in Ocean City, New Jersey, while their horses raced at Atlantic City: a couple of dollars of allowance a week went on the boardwalk courses. He became a horse trainer himself, with a stable at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, and on trips to tracks and horse sales he played every course he could find and called it research.
His idea of a course next to the Monmouth Park track became Blue Grass Mini Golf, built in 2012 with a horse-racing theme. In 2013 he came across the USPMGA tour and offered to host the US Open: it was played there in 2014, when Matt McCaslin won his fourth title, and again in 2017, when Olivia Prokopova won. A third, in 2020, had to be canceled because of the pandemic.
